Statement About Recent Targeting of LGBTQIA+ Students in San Dieguito District Community

LCC ASB recognizes the recent discriminatory and hateful comments targeting transgender and LGBTQIA+ individuals from members of the district community. We firmly denounce this behavior and behavior that detrimentally affects student well-being and expression.

We are committed to creating a more inclusive and nurturing student body that provides support to every single Maverick. LCC ASB is currently collaborating with the Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) to best provide assistance to them, as well as parallel district student clubs & organizations. We are dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will continue to strive to make LCC a better, more welcoming school community.

We strongly encourage students to seek out emotional support, if needed, from counselors and PALs.

SDUHSD Board Passes Resolution Written by ASB Presidents

ASB Co-Presidents Andrew Baum and Shane Baum authored a gun violence prevention resolution that was included on the SDUHSD Board of Trustees agenda at the August 25, 2022 regular meeting. Andrew and Shane defended the resolution after presenting the resolution to the board. The resolution eventually passed unanimously (3-0) after slight adjustments to specific wording. The resolution is the first public-written resolution in district history.

Andrew and Shane were featured in The San Diego Union-Tribune community news, the Encinitas Advocate, and The Coast News.

New Members Welcomed at Annual Retreat

The student body Executive Board hosted its annual summer retreat at La Quinta Resort and Club in Palm Springs, California between July 27 and July 29.

Members were welcomed through the program’s onboarding process, which included written agreements, committee assignments, class deliberations, fundraiser brainstorming, and finance orientation.

The board also announced its new committee chairs. Andrew Baum, Emma Bambe and Reese Silcox chair the communications committee. Abbey Baum and Emma Gutierrez lead the marketing subcommittee. Ava Ohnstad and Selena Tsai chair the engagement subcommittee.

Renee Roesler and Mia DiGiulio head the student programming committee. Sasha Bell chairs the community outreach committee and Shayne Barnhill and Tatum Vercoe lead the student wellness committee. Shane Baum will lead the new select governance and oversight committee.

Congratulations to the La Costa Canyon Class of 2022

The La Costa Canyon High School Class of 2022 graduated on June 3rd, surrounded by their classmates, friends, family, peers, staff, and faculty.

We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the preceding Executive Board members: President Dylan Abernathy, Vice President Casey DeHaan, Board Representative Olivia Pacheco, Secretary Lauren Hendricks, Treasurer Scott Belin, and Class President Danny Dougherty.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication this school year. Your successors wish you the best of luck in your future plans—and we will miss you.

LCC Names New Executive Board, Class Officers

The Elections Council conducted its annual student body elections cycle on Friday, April 22nd, after a school week of campaigning by elected officer candidates.

Almost all of the positions — ranging from ASB President to Sophomore Class Vice President — were contested elections. ASB President, ASB Vice President, School Board Representative, and Sophomore Class President were uncontested.

The student body, on Friday, voted for their next Executive Board members and class officers. The Executive Board posts were nominated by each student, while class officers were chosen by their grade.

With a voter turnout of 621 voters — an approximate fifty-one percent voter turnout — Mavericks chose the following student leaders to represent them next school year by 3:00 PM.

Andrew Baum and Shane Baum, both class of 2023, will be the student body presidents of La Costa Canyon High School. Sasha Bell, who will serve as a student representative on the SDUHSD Board of Trustees, was also installed to serve on the Executive Board.

The preceding Executive Board and class officers will leave office on July 1st, leaving the succeeding officers to being their term.

Student Leaders Meet with Dr. Ward & Trustee Young

Student leaders from programs across La Costa Canyon were featured in the ‘Talk Around Town’ video with Superintendent Dr. Cheryl James-Ward and Trustee Katrina Young on November 22nd.

The featured students included Olivia Pacheco (ASB), Dylan Abernathy (ASB), Bella Leath (PALs, Black Student Union), Giselle Reyes (PALs, Hispanic Student Union), Shane Baum (ASB, Racial Equity Alliance), and Andrew Baum (ASB, Racial Equity Alliance).

The video included topics surrounding campus improvement, school happenings, programs, innovation, and ‘preparing for 2030.’

Homecoming Week 2021 Officially Wraps Up - 10/17/21

ASB successfully organized and planned the first in-person all-inclusive dance since February 2020. This year’s Homecoming theme, “Wild, Wild West.”

The first Homecoming event was Spirit Week from Monday, October 11 through Friday, October 15. It featured Pajama Day, 2000s Throwback Day, Tacky Tourist Day, Jersey Day, and Wild, Wild West Day.

Homecoming dance tickets were sold from September 28 through October 15.

The LCC Varsity football team successfully dominated the game on October 15 against Valley Center 34-7. The Homecoming Court winners were also celebrated at the game at halftime. The Senior Court winners were Lauren Hendricks & Bobby Maggiore.

The dance was on October 16 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. It featured an ice cream truck, a churro cart, games like bocce ball and cornhole, music and a DJ.

"Wild Wild West" Homecoming Theme Revealed - 9/28/21

The Associated Student Body announced its 2021 Homecoming theme, “Wild Wild West” and its freshmen, sophomore, and junior Homecoming court winners.

The September 28th Homecoming Pep Rally was the first all-student spirit event in 20 months since the pandemic began.

Below are the Homecoming finalists:

  • Sophomores: Judge Berman, Sophia Pinto

  • Juniors: Jacob Echan, Kate Maggiore

  • Seniors: To be announced

Homecoming week begins Monday, October 11th with the Football Game scheduled for October 15th at 7:00 PM and the Wild Wild West Dance scheduled for October 16th from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Homecoming tickets are available for purchase until the end of lunch on October 15th (prices increase every Monday by $5).

LCC Rep. Initiates New Board Meeting Comms. - 9/23/21

LCC Student Representative to the SDUHSD Board of Trustees Olivia Pacheco has initiated a new form of communication between students and community members.

This new process will include 1) a survey that will allow Olivia to gather student and community input, 2) a newsletter that will explain Board decisions to better inform students, and 3) student townhall meetings before regular Board meetings.

The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 14 at 5:00 PM. More information about Board meetings is available on the SDUHSD Board of Trustees website and information about the new communications process will be posted soon. Members Approve Competency Training Proposal - 9/22/21

At the September 22, 2021 regular Business Meeting of the Associated Student Body of La Costa Canyon High School, the Student Council unanimously motioned and voted (44-0) to approve a proposal for diversity, equity, and inclusion competency training and workshops.

The proposal was written by Dr. Darwin Fishman, Ph.D., founder of Alafia Love & Diversity, LLC, a non-profit organization that specializes in equity trainings.

Alafia Love & Diversity (ALD) is “devoted to the nourishment and support of historically neglected communities through education, training, critical and informed assessment, personal and public actions. Our work is based on sharing knowledge and resources with diverse populations. This work can enrich and uplift all communities through shared accountability and collective responsibility.”

The Executive Board and Advisor plan to set dates for these trainings as soon as possible.

ASB To Organize First Dance, Pep Rally in 20 Months - 9/13/21

The Associated Student Body and its members are almost complete with planning and organizing its first school dance and pep rally since the January 2020 Formal “A Night in Paradise” pep rally: Homecoming 2021.

The Homecoming theme and Homecoming royalty winners will be announced on Tuesday, September 28th following the pep rally.

The Homecoming Football Game will be played on Friday, October 15th at 7:00 PM and the Homecoming Dance will be hosted on Saturday, October 16th at 7:00 PM.
